Russia is Set to Maintain Close Co-Operation with EU to Ensure Security on Balkans

Russia is resolved to maintain close co-operation with the European Union and Balkan countries to ensure security on the peninsula. Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said this at a news conference following talks with Goran Svilanovic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia and Montenegro.

Issues related to intensification of Russia-EU contacts, including in the defence and security area, were prominent on the meeting agenda, said Mr Ivanov.

Mr Svilanovic, on his part, thanked Russia for helping his country join the Council of Europe. Serbia and Montenegro will foster stability in the Balkans and encourage neighbouring countries' rapprochement with Europe, he assured.
