Russia Believes it Early to Discuss Kosovo's Final Status

The Russian Foreign Ministry believes that discussing the final status of Kosovo "is untimely in the current circumstances." Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said as much in a RIA Novosti interview on the eve of the Russian visit by Foreign Minister of Serbia and Montenegro Goran Svilanovic.

According to him, "a certain progress" has been achieved in the Kosovo settlement by the efforts of the world community; however, the Kosovo problem remains urgent, and it's to early to announce any substantial breakthrough or irreversibility of the positive changes in the province.

"Effective measures aimed at ensuring Kosovo security and authentic national equality in all aspects" are required, the Russian diplomat said.

According to him, raising the question about the final status of the province means resorting to the tactics of "fait accompli" for Kosovo's movement to independence.

"The principle approved by the key participants of the settlement remains in force: standards first, the status next," the Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman stressed.
