Russia, Poland to Sign Intergovernmental Agreement on Military And Technical Cooperation

Russia and Poland are going to sign an intergovernmental agreement on military and technical cooperation, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov stated on Tuesday, when opening negotiations with his Polish counterpart, Defence Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski.

According to Ivanov, this agreement is a crucial step towards "restoring relations in the military and technical area, which have always existed between our countries." During the negotiations the defence ministers intend to discuss what has been done to fulfil the previously signed agreements and what must be done in the future.

Relations between groups and forces in Russia's Kaliningrad region and Poland's Maritime Military district as well as between the fleets have recently become more intense, Ivanov pointed out. The Russian defence minister added that during the meeting he intended to touch upon security in the European region as well as development of military cooperation with the EU and NATO.

Mr Szmajdzinski, on his part, said that he was glad to continue the dialogue. He pointed to an agreement envisaging "practical Russian-Polish military cooperation".

The Polish minister pointed to the new character of Russian-Polish relations and said that the upcoming signing of the agreement on military and technical cooperation was a good example of it. Mr Szmajdzinski believes Russian-Polish military contacts acquired a new quality due to the new relations between Russia and the NATO.

Mr Ivanov invited a group of Polish ships to participate in the celebration of the Baltic Fleet's 300th anniversary.
