Ministry of Natural Resources Plans to Develop Under-Productive Russian Timber Export

Earnings from Russian timber export in 2002 will be not higher than USD 142 million. This prognosis was announced on Wednesday at a press conference in Moscow by President of the Union of Manufacturers and Timber Experts of Russia, Miron Tatsun. He said that timber export (mostly unprocessed) is sold by around 13 thousand Russian enterprises. Only 1.3% of timber exported worldwide comes from Russia.

Mr Tatsun remarked that this is an extremely low figure, especially considering the enormous potential of Russia, where one quarter of the world's timber resources are situated - the only 100% renewable natural resource. However, the high volume of timber trade on the domestic and international markets, as well as the constant growth of demand for it provide the conditions for sharp growth in the volume of production and export of paper products, according to Tatsun. He said that the package for stimulation of timber export is the most important step by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation towards the plan for developing the timber industry in Russia. This plan will be presented at a government meeting on September 1, 2002.

Tatsun said that from September 2 to 5 2002, the first Wood and Man international forum will take place in Moscow, organised by the Union of Manufacturers and Timber Exporters as well as the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the Trade and Industry Chamber of the Russian Federation and Expocentre. The aim of the forum is to attract the attention of Russian and foreign business circles, and scientific and social organisations to the problems of the Russian timber economy and industry, their potential and their investment possibilities.
