Negative trends more definite in Russian economy

Consumer demand, the major factor of economic development, is still met by import in Russia, stated Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov when opening a regular government session on Thursday.

Among negative factors of the Russian economic development Kasyanov named the unfavourable external economic situation. In particular, in the first 6 months of 2002, Russian export fell by 7 per cent, while import grew by the same 7 per cent. The financial prosperity of enterprises decreased by the same figure, "while balance of local and regional budgets in some cases were not reached", the prime minister said.

Some budgets had such a deficit that it led to 7-per cent salary delays, according to his information. He also reported "incomplete stability in state finances and in the corporate sector." Kasyanov called for analysing the negative factors and working out measures for the latter six months of 2002 in order to strengthen the existing positive trends and diminish the negative ones.
