Parliamentary Upper Chamber passes a law on agricultural lands turnover

On Wednesday the Federal Assembly /Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament/ passed the law permitting the sale of agricultural lands. Earlier it was passed by the Lower Chamber of the Parliament. The law, which was worked out upon the government initiative, had been actively opposed against by the leftist political parties.

Upon their insistence an amendment, which prohibits selling land to foreign citizens, was introduced to the law. The law also prohibits privatisation of land, occupied by deer pastures in the Far North. There were also imposed limitations on the size of land, being in property of a single person.

According to the law, the priority right on the regulation of the land turnover was given to the regional authorities.
