No comment from presidential aide officials on Chechen amnesty application

The office of presidential aide Sergei Yastrzhembsky has so far made no comment on reports that Abu Arsanukayev, the former head of first president of Ichkeria Dzhokhar Dudayev's Security Service, has submitted an application to be amnestied. The first Chechen campaign by federal forces was conducted while Dudayev was in power.

RIA Novosti learnt on Wednesday that Yastrzhembsky's office was still checking the reports about the request.

Earlier, the Chechen government's press-service had told RIA Novosti that Arsanukayev had applied to Chechen administration head Ahmad Kadyrov. The latter turns to the relevant bodies to start the rehabilitation procedures.

In his appeal, Arsanukayev says that he "did not commit any crime and has not relation to the terrorist activity of the illegal armed formations." In the opinion of local observers, this personal appeal by such a prominent figure could cause waves in society.

Arsanukayev took part in military operations again federal forces during the first Chechen campaign. Following the start of the current anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus, the former head of Dudayev's security service left Chechen territory.
