MTS launches mobile network in Belarus

Mobile TeleSystems, one of the major Russian mobile telecommunications operators, started operating its cellular network in Belarus. The commercial operation of the network will be supervised by a Belarus-Russian joint venture Mobile TeleSystems. At the moment of the network launch its coverage extended to the larger part of Minsk, the Belarus capital, and the area of the Belarus national airport Minsk. 20 base stations supplied by Siemens are currently in operation along with a switch exchange with a capacity of 100,000 lines. By the end of September the total number of base stations in Minsk and its outskirts will reach 70. According to the press service of Mobile TeleSystems, this will enable the company to start providing reliable mobile telecommunications services in Minsk and its suburbs by fall this year.

Mobile TeleSystems is the first GSM mobile telecommunications operator in Belarus, which operates in GSM 900 and GSM 1800 standards.
