International scientific-practical conference of ophthalmologists in Samara

An international scientific-practical conference devoted to the birth centenary of Tikhon Yeroshevsky, an outstanding Russian ophthalmologist, has opened in Samara (centre of a Central Volga Region).

The conference is held as part of the 6th international seminar on problems of aged people, which is attended by leading medical workers from all regions of Russia, as well as guests from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and India.

Tikhon Yeroshevsky, founder of the famous Samara ophthalmological school and honorary citizen of Kuibyshev (as Samara was formerly called) was born in 1902.

He holds priority in creating Russia's first specialized ophthalmological complex which includes an in-patient and children's departments, an out-patient clinic, electronic microscopy laboratory and contact vision correction, and a vivarium with an operating room.

In his scientific work, Yeroshevsky paid particular attention to problems of treating glaucoma. It was at his initiative that a scientific research laboratory was set up to study this disease. The Samara clinic was one of the first to introduce photocoagulation of the eye retina, and in the beginning of the 1980s -- of laser surgery and therapy of various eye diseases. Tikhon Yeroshevsky has trained more than 20 doctors who later became heads of ophthalmology departments at various higher medical educational establishments in Russia.
