MTS estimates its cellular market share at 37%

The Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) company currently controls 37% of Russia's cellular market. MTS Vice-President Alexei Buyanov announced this data at a conference organized by the Renaissance Capital Investment Group today. He added that MTS held licenses to provide services in 49 regions of Russia, but in fact, MTS had cellular networks only in 39 regions. According to Buyanov, the company's networks will be put into commercial use in 11 more regions of the country before the end of 2002. In general, regional users make up 45% of the MTS network. According to information from the company, the MTS share of the St. Petersburg market is 25%, which is equal to 400,000 users. Additionally, the MTS vice-president reported that commercial use of the GPRS technology would commence in Moscow and 7 other regions of Russia this summer.
