Vladimir Putin counts upon support of Kaliningrad veterans in ensuring Russia's interests in the region

President Putin of Russia counts upon the support of the veterans of the Kaliningrad region (a Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea) in ensuring Russia's interests in the region. He said this at the All-Russia Conference of Veteran Activists on Friday.

The subject of the Kaliningrad region was raised by one of the veterans living in the region. He thanked the president for his active stand at the talks with the European Union concerning the Kaliningrad region. However, he complained at the same time that war veterans living in the Kaliningrad region are already now in a position that is unequal compared with that of veterans living in other parts of Russia.

The speaker explained that fares from the Kaliningrad region to Moscow are too expensive, since the routes pass through one of the Baltic states.

Vladimir Putin replied to this that the government is currently studying the issue and in all probability will settle it by "re-distributing tariffs."
