Brazil: 11 buses robbed in 30 hours

In Campinas, Sao Paulo, eleven buses were robbed within the space of little more than a day, a mirror of the horrific crime-wave which has continued to worsen with the present centre-right government of President Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s Social Democratic Party (PSDB) and their allies.

In Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador de Bahia, even Recife, it is not uncommon to find gangs of bandits using AR-15 assault rifles, which are powerful enough to send a bullet through a wall. The climate of social injustice, of hopelessness and impunity through rampant corruption, leaves the average citizen of Brazil open to attack wherever he goes or whenever he ventures out of his home.

This is the legacy of decades of corrupt centre-right government, which have led to 40,000,000 Brazilians living below the poverty line.
