Russia sets no demands concerning communications with Kaliningrad region

Russia sets no demands concerning communications with the Kaliningrad region (Russia's enclave on the Baltic sea) but only insists on keeping transit via Lithuania that has been practised for several years and proves to be mutually favorable, said the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Lithuania Yuri Zubakov in his interview with RIA Novosti.

"These are not corridors but usual routes of usual trains," the diplomat said.

Zubakov believes that during the EU expansion the unusual situation around the Kaliningrad region, which must not be isolated from the rest of Russia, should be taken into account. It is incredible that a citizen of Russia, moving from one Russia's region to another, needs a visa, Zubakov said.

The Lithuanian authorities promise to implement a flexible visa system, modernise border control posts and establish low prices for long-term documents.

"However, the real situation is different. Prices for entrance visas to Lithuania have increased. Russia in its turn will also have to follow suit," the ambassador said.

He expressed the hope that those responsible in the neighbouring countries as well as experts will come to a reasonable decision, which will be acceptable for both sides.

The Russian ambassador's arguments were also broadcast on the Lithuanian national radio.
