Shimon Peres agrees to Palestinian State

Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres has declared in Sofia that he is in favour of creating a Palestinian State within the next eight weeks, without firm borders but with the permanent status of a state, so as to begin with meaningful peace negotiations.

He made his statement on Monday at a press conference in the Bulgarian capital, the day before a Hamas suicide bomber caused 60 victims in a crowded bus near Jerusalem. Shimon Peres declared that “In this agreement, we hope that a Palestinian State can be set up within a period of eight weeks, without defined frontiers”. He added that, “The State would be provisory regarding frontiers, but not as a State”.

The notion of a Palestinian State being set up concurrent with a process of peace negotiations has recently been discussed in Washington, Cairo and Riyadh.
