Venezuela: Chavez under pressure

“Until when, Chavez?” read the banners carried by thousands of protest marchers in the streets of Caracas, as the Venezuelan President is called upon to resign. Protesters from ten political parties and 30 Non-Governmental Organisations took to the streets to call for change.

Two thousand policemen were stationed in Caracas ahead of this high-profile, high-tension march by opposition groups to President Hugo Chavez, who was elected in 1998 and re-elected in 2000 for a period of six years.

The main claim by the protesters was “Justice for all!” a common theme in Latin American politics, where the continent’s resources are kept in a stranglehold by a minority, controlled from abroad.
