UNO Summit: Football before Starvation, Berlusconi-stlye

The members of the United Nations Organisation for Food and Agriculture, which participated in the Twelfth FAO Summit against Hunger, declared their desire to eradicate hunger and starvation in the world but were unable to come to agreement as to how. The Summit was brought forward two hours for Silvio Berlusconi to see the Italy-Mexico football match.

The Summit took place in Rome at the same time that Non-Governmental Organisations held a parallel summit against hunger, declaring that they were not satisfied with the result of the former meeting. They “express their collective feeling of having been deceived and reject the final declaration issued by the Summit. Far from the problems which were blocking progress having been analysed and corrected, the new plan of action against hunger commits the same errors”, in a joint declaration.

Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Premier, leading a coalition of centre-right and fascist parties, considered that the meeting was “useful to obtain a new political commitment” in the fight to combat hunger, which affects 815,000,000 people around the world, who starve to death every year. Many of these are children and most of these live in Africa.

The question of how to eradicate hunger will continue to be discussed at the forthcoming G8 meeting in Canada at the end of June.

The Summit was brought forward two hours for Berlusconi to be able to watch the Italy-Mexico game. It is clear where the priorities of certain people lie.
