OSCE meeting in Lisbon targets terrorism

International terrorism was the main dossier on the table at the OSCE Summit in Lisbon on Wednesday. Counter-terrorism experts from all the European countries met to discuss joint strategy against terrorist organisations.

The Summit was entitled “High Level Conference on the Combat against and Prevention of Terrorism”, which served to establish a point of contact among the international counter-terrorist organisations, so as to make their task clearer, better coordinated and therefore easier. Portugal is hosting the presidency of the OSCE until the end of the year

The coordinator of the Summit was the Portuguese ambassador to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Joao Rosa La, who declared that the fight against international terrorism is “an obligation for all nations”.

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Anatoly Safonov, attended the Summit, along with the US counter-terrorism coordinator, Francis Taylor and their counterparts from the EU and eastern European nations.

It is hoped that in the near future, a consensus for action can be reached and that a guideline for concrete measures can be set in motion, in a climate where “wait and see” are the words of the day as the world waits for the next terrorist attack.
