Mass protests in Afghanistan. The people demand Zaher Shah

After a recent postponement, the election of the Afghani prime minister is very likely to take place at a Loya Jirga session in Kabul on Thursday. Voting procedures and candidates to the post of Loya Jirga chairman were discussed by deputies for 12 hours on Wednesday. On Thursday, Chairman of the Loya Jirga commission Mohammed Ismail Qasim Yar, follower of interim leader Hamid Karzai, was elected to this post. Under the present-day situation, voting concerning Hamid Karzai candidature is a mere formality, because the candidate has managed to win the support of the Northern Alliance field commanders and Zaher Shah’s followers.

At the same time, it is not correct to say the candidate enjoys nation-wide support. On Thursday, mass protest actions in support of Zaher Shah broke out in several southern settlements of Afghanistan. Witnesses say that thousands of people gathered in the streets of Spinbuldak and Tahtapul with demands to elect the King president of Afghanistan. Protesters have blocked several highways, and clashes with soldiers have been reported.
