Plague of locusts devastates China

China has been invaded by the largest plague of locusts in history, which has reached a density of around five thousand insects per square metre, a record.

Fourteen autonomous regions are already affected by this enormous cloud of insects, which threatens to multiply almost exponentially within the coming weeks. This year’s plague of locusts is described as “potentially catastrophic” by Liu Jian, Director of the Locust Control Department at the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture.

The plague affects the north and east of the country and is more prevalent in the states of Hebei and Xandong, covering an area 10% greater than the plague which devastated agriculture last year.
