Locusts invade Siberia

An emergency situations regime has been introduced in the Irkutsk Region ( Eastern Siberia) in connection with the spread of locusts and garden webworms there. In some places the pest density is as high as 200 per square km with the safety margin at 7. According to expert forecasts, the pests may damage over 100,000 hectares of arable land.

Vice-Governor Sergei Brilka, chairman of the emergency situations commission of the Irkutsk Region, said that large manpower and technical resources will be used for combating the locusts and garden webworms.
