Scientists do not rule out possible eruption of Klyuchevskoi volcano in Kamchatka

Scientists are not ruling out a possibility of eruption of the Klyuchevskoi volcano in Kamchatka within the next 1-2 months.

As the laboratory of active volcanism of the Institute of Volcanology said, heightened volcanic activity has been registered under the Klyuchevskoi volcano. "Since mid-March weak volcanic earthquakes testifying to heightened activity of the volcano were constantly registered at a depth of about 30 kilometres," the Institute of Volcanology staffers noted.

According to the scientists, the character of seismic activity changed on June 1st, and "an upswing of volcanic activity is noted at a depth of 5-7 kilometres below the crater at the top." The volcano does not breed danger to the populated areas now, with the nearest town of Klyuchi situated 32 kilometres away from Klyuchevskoi, the Institute of Volcanology specialists stated.
