Leonid Kuchma almost met with his ex-guard Nikolai Melnichenko

As it became known, ex-guard of the Ukrainian President Nikolai Melnichenko who received political asylum in the United States because of so-called “cassette scandal” has met in Brussels with representatives of the European Commission. This was reported at the press-conference in International Journalist Federation. According to Melnichenko, this was not by chance that his arrival coincided with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma’s blitz-visit, who yesterday evening came to the supper with the chairman of European Commission, Romano Prodi . Nikolai Melnichenko also reported that at the meetings with representatives of the European Commission and of other European organizations, the records he possesses were also touched, concerning Russian-Ukrainian relations, including gas supply and Ukrainian special services’ activity “on vectors of the US, the Arab East, and CIS.” According to Melnichenko, he did not present this information to the US judges, because he knows it is confidential and could injure state interests of Ukraine and Russia. He also confirmed his readiness to help Russia in investigation of “stealing Russian gas” and to call names, circumstances, exact sums, and banks through which the money was transferred. Representatives of International Journalist Federation and of Reporters without Borders organization demand from the Ukrainian leadership to carry out an independent investigation of journalist Georgy Gongadze’s death. To achieve this, they act through different European organizations, first of all through Council of Europe, whose member Ukraine is. While Melnichenko was finishing his press-conference, Leonid Kuchma was preparing for the supper. According to Brussels office of Svoboda radio station, Leonid Kuchma and Romano Prodi met in a restaurant in the central square of the city. It became known from inform sources, that Melnichenko had not met with Kuchma: the major is very busy and has to meet with many important persons in Brussels, while the Ukrainian President’s programme was short: after some short time he spend in the embassy after the flight, he has a two-hours working lunch, and then flies back to Ukraine.
