Security beefed up at resorts in southern Russia

Russia's interior ministry is taking additional security measures at Russia's resorts in the south. Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov has defined a set of additional measures to ensure security in the country's resort areas. Alexander Chekalin, the head of the public security service of the Russian interior ministry, said as much at a conference in Tuapse /the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus/. In his words, the interior bodies should fulfil the important task - to ensure Russians' security, their calm and comfort while the latter are realising their constitutional right to rest. Recently, the resort sector of Russia's south has been actively developing. This year some 12 million people are expected to have rest in southern Russia, which is twice as much as two years ago, he remarked. Chekalin stressed that the number of tasks facing the interior ministry was increasing to a proportionate degree. The situation calls for heightened attention in view of recent terrorist acts in Vladikavkaz /the capital of North Ossetia-Alania/ on April 28th and on May 9th in Kaspiisk /50 km south of the Dagestani capital of Makhachkala on the western coast of the Caspian/. "The situation in the region remains tense due to the Chechen bandit activities - their agony is dangerous, and the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict also arouses concern," said the deputy minister. In these conditions, law-enforcement bodies should be highly vigilant and their readiness should live up to all standards, he stressed.
