A conference of ministers of interior of the states of the Baltic Region completed its work in Germany

On Tuesday a conference of ministers of Interior of countries of the Baltic region completed its work in Lubeck (Germany). The Russian delegation at the conference was headed by state secretary and deputy head of the Russian Ministry of Interior Vladimir Vasiliyev. While commenting in his interview to RIA Novosti on the results of the Lubeck conference, Vasiliyev indicated that it was held in the atmosphere of complete mutual understanding demonstrated by representatives of ministries of Interior and Justice of 11 states. Conference participants drew attention to problems of stopping financial flows used by terrorists, of money laundering, fight against narcotics dealers and human trade. Vasiliyev drew special attention to the problem of drugs coming from Afghanistan into Europe. According to him, the common objective of the police structures of the Baltic region is to block the channel through which narcotics are coming from Afghanistan, "if there is no possibility so far to eliminate the crops." In this connection Vasiliyev noted German and Russian efforts to provide assistance to Afghanistan to restore and equip local police bodies. According to the RIA Novosti's interlocutor, Russia also drew attention of its counterparts from the Baltic states to the danger of "spreading" of professional terrorists from Chechnya, Afghanistan and Georgia to other regions with their subsequent legalization there.
