The May Day was marked in Australia by violent demonstrations in major cities. A coalition of left wing and anti-globalist groups launched this morning a series of protests aimed at blocking the entrances to Stock Exchange building in State capitals. In Melbourne, some 4,000 protesters were fighting running battles with riot police in the city centre. Similarsituations developed in Sydney and Brisbane. In Perth, police on horseback charged into a crowd of demonstrators. Pictures shown by Australian news services are reminiscent of events in Seattle. Some organizers of the demonstrations accuse the police force of using excessive brutality and actually aggravating the situation. The authorities, on the other hand, point out the fact that a number of buildings were vandalized by demonstrators during their protest.
