Leningrad Nuclear Plant feared to be targeted by terrorists

“In the area around the city of Saint Petersburg, there is a number of installations where subversive activity may entail serious consequences not only for Russia’s north- west, but also for the adjacent countries,” Sergei Smirnov, the local Federal Security Service (FSB) chief, has told journalists. According to him, FSB has information of terrorist groups being prepared for penetrating into the territory of the city of St.Petersburg and the Leningrad Region and committing terrorist acts there. “The attacks conducted in Moscow or St.Petersburg “are sure to have much more political impact than the blasts performed somewhere in remote or unknown areas,” the intelligence officer added. Among the sites possibly targeted by the terrorists, Mr. Smirnov named the Leningrad Nuclear Plant.
