Russia Intending To Raise Sugar Import Duties

The government commission for protectionist measures in foreign trade and customs duty policies decided on Friday that a tariff hike in regard to duties on white sugar was essential. Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade Dmitry Sukhoparov told journalists that the commission was proposing that tariffs be raised from 30 to 45%. The deputy minister reminded the press that seasonal duties are used for six months. They come into force after the appropriate instructions are issued by the government. In addition to this subject, the commission discussed import duties on unprocessed cane. However, a series of sugar beet producing regions requested that a decision on this matter be deferred. The commission asked the Ministry of Natural Resources to provide additional materials on this question so that it could be considered at its next session.
