Since 1959 the territory of Altai, the republic in western Siberia is being used as an area where waste stages of carrier rockets, launched from Baikonur, fall. More then 2 thousand tons of the “space debris” have fallen to the territory of the republic within this period. These are second stages of more then 400 space ships. The time for cleaning has come: it was announced today that works to clean the territory would begin June, 1. An agreement between the administration of the republic and strategical troops about such “cleaning” has already been reached. Even contractor to gather the scrap metal is already found. It is one of local firms. A ton of gathered debris of the rockets’ stages will presumably cost $600.
