Thousands of cases of sleeping sickness in Angola

The potentially lethal “sleeping sickness” sweeps through Angola, where it has caused 4,500 confirmed cases in recent weeks. Attacking mainly women and children, the death rate from this disease is 15%. The Institute to Combat and Control Tripanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness) in Luanda has confirmed that there are 4,500 registered cases in the northern third of the country. If untreated, the disease can be fatal. It is caused by the bite of the TseTse fly. The symptoms are headaches, dizziness, nausea, lethargy, muscle spasms and finally, a deep somnolence.
