The supreme court of Daghestan, one of Russia’s Caucasian republics neighbouring Chechnya, has sentenced 2 persons, suspected of blowing up an apartment block, to life imprisonment. Two other suspects got 9 years in prison. The remaining 2 suspects were freed in a courtroom under the amnesty law. The defence lawyers of those sentenced said they would be appealing. In September, 1999, over 50 people were killed as a result of the explosion in a cantonment in Buinaksk town.
