Radio Liberty mulls broadcasting in Chechen

Thomas Dine, the president of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, says his radio is planning to broadcast in Avar, Chechen, and Circassian languages. “Despite the fact that most of North Caucasian peoples understand Russian, they are sure to prefer listening programmes in their mother tongs,” Mr. Dine is quoted as saying while emphasizing his commitment for providing “unbiased and measured information.” Russian authorities have reacted negatively to the radio's plans calling it a “serious mistake endangering Russia’s information security,” according to Mr. Lesin, Russia’s press minister.
