Global warming: Malaria in Rio

Rio de Janeiro registers its first ever endemic case of malaria, as the nightmare all the world’s cities feared has come true: tropical diseases will become a reality outside the tropics as the world’s climate heats up.

The case of malaria was registered in the historic city of Paraty, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is believed the victim caught the disease from the mosquito Anopheles Crussi when he was walking along a beach in that city.

The health authorities are looking for areas where the mosquito is breeding and have cordoned off the area.

The patient entered hospital on Tuesday complaining of a headache, high fever and body pains. The diagnosis of malaria was confirmed but he is said to be recovering.
