Australia: Riot in Woomera

Hundreds of violent protesters brought from all over the country were fighting battles with police around the Woomera Detention Centre for illegal immigrants earlier today. The Centre houses hundreds of illegal immigrants found NOT to be genuine refugees and awaiting the result of their last court appeal. About 1,000 left-wing protesters destroyed the perimeter fence, damaged property and released 46 inmates. All but eight escapees were since captured. Several thousand illegal immigrants were smuggled into Australia in recent years, many arriving in small fishing boats from Indonesia. The Government claims that a tough policy against people smuggling adopted recently in Australia brings a tangible improvement of the situation. Nevertheless, some left wing groups in the country propagate noisy activism aimed at releasing all illegal arrivals into the community.
