Nature avenges

Another earthquake occurred in Afghanistan. Nature is avenging the drug manufacturers. The second earthquake shocked Afghanistan today, a country that has not seen peace for 20 years.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush mountains. The first quake happened at 7:30 p.m. local time on Monday, devastating the poor agricultural region, which has been already ruined with the longstanding war and draught. Some 30 thousand people were deprived of their homes.

Another quake took place in the region on Wednesday morning, and the number of killed probably exceeds 2000. Hundreds of rescuers are doing their best to save those who might be alive under the debris. However, that was not all; the latest information is that there has been another 5.2 earthquake in the country.

The interim Afghan administration is trying to establish an effort to rescue the people, but it seems that it cannot cope with the situation, and the repeated quakes make it all the worse. Thousands of people do not have a place to live, taking account of the fact that the temperature goes below zero in the mountains at night.

The world sympathizes with the people of Afghanistan. The UN calls upon the world community to render help to the country. Russia sent its rescuers to Afghanistan, and the workers of American and humanitarian organizations united their efforts together with their colleagues from other countries in order to deliver food, tents, and blankets.

US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said that the deliveries to the regions had been started and other forms of help are being arranged.

The previous quakes:

On March 3, 2002: killing 70 people in the northern province of Samangan.

In May of 1998, 5000 people were killed in the northern provinces Takhar and Badakhshan.

February 1998, 4500 victims in Takhar.
