Barcelona: war zone as 300,000 take to streets

Almost 100 anti-globalisation activists were arrested in Barcelona during the EU summit.

98 people were arrested and nine injured during police and anti-globalisation protesters in Barcelona, a city which saw running battles in its streets in six major demonstrations, in two days. Las Ramblas, resembled more a war zone than a historic centre.

Most of the arrests were made on Saturday as a massive demonstration of 300,000 people took to the streets to shout slogans against globalisation. Unruly elements mixed with the crowds, many of them from abroad, namely France and the UK, provoking clashes with the police.
