Russia, International Energy Agency Plan Joint Activities

A programme for joint activities of Russia and International Energy Agency (IEA) will be developed shortly. It will cover the principal areas of cooperation for the period from 2002 through 2004. According to the press service of Russia's Ministry of Energy, an agreement to this effect was reached yesterday at a meeting of Igor Yusufov, Russia's Minister of Energy, with Robert Priddle, the Executive Director of the IEA. The parties expressed their interest in long-term cooperation and the strengthening of ties between them, including relations between the IEA and Russia's industrial companies. The IEA delegation arrived for the presentation of the review of 'The Energy-related Policies of Russia in 2002'. The parties signed a joint memorandum to say that this event, representatives of all interested agencies attending, 'presents a favourable opportunity to look into all the recommendations contained in the review, concerning prices and taxes on energy, nuclear safety, energy efficiency, environmental protection, that is, the aspects of the IEA's activity directly related to the energy security of Russia'.

The review of 'The Energy-related Policies of Russia in 2002' includes a detailed analysis of the existing situation in Russia's energy complex and such its sectors as oil, gas, coal, nuclear power and electricity production. The first such review was issued in 1995.
