Middle East: Peace!

Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has come up with a peace plan which is being praised by all. Even the Israelis are showing interest.

The peace plan is basically extremely simple: The Israelis leave the occupied territories which they took from the Palestinians, after expelling the Palestinian owners, and the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world formally recognise the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace.

So far, the plan has been received enthusiastically by the Russian Federation, by the US administration, US Secretary of State Colin Powell calling it “a significant step forward”, by France, Egypt and Jordan. Israel, for its part, is trying to gain time and space for manoeuvre, since it feels the international community is closing in, expecting some give and take from Tel Aviv.

However, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared that he is interested to consider the proposal and Israeli President Moshe Katsav invited crown prince Abdullah to present his peace plan in Jerusalem.

Prince Abdullah has declared that he is prepared to present his proposal to the Arab League Summit, which will take place in Beirut, Lebanon, at the end of March. The wording of the proposal is “total normalisation of relations in return for a total withdrawal (by Israel) from the occupied territories, including Jerusalem, in agreement with the United Nations Resolutions”.

Due to the state of health of Kind Fahd, it is crown prince Abdullah ben Abdel Aziz who virtually runs Saudi Arabia. It appears the writing is on the wall for the belligerent faction in Tel Aviv. If other countries (such as Iraq) are expected to follow UN Resolutions, then so is Israel. The display of hypocrisy in the international community over this issue appears to be at an end.
