The Lynch law returning

The Muslim world’s reaction to the bombing of Afghanistan seems to be going to the extreme. Indonesia, one of the world’s largest Muslim countries, has seen a lynch law of sorts staged by Islamic radicals on local Christians. The incident has taken place in the city of Maxar, which is located in the central east of Indonesia. According to the Jakarta press, an aggressive mob blocked a road and staged a thorough document check. All who, in their view, looked like Christians, were beaten severely. The police failed to prevent the outrage. Generally speaking, the Indonesian authorities have opposed the US plans in Afghanistan from the very start. Joining the Arab world’s united front, they have demanded that the bombardments of Afghanistan, which entail many civilian deaths, should be stopped. At the recent Pacific Region Forum, they reaffirmed their position on the subject. In Indonesia itself, where 80% of the population are Muslim, a recruiting of volunteers for Afghanistan is being conducted virtually openly. Mass demonstrations in support of Osama bin Laden and the Taliban movement are held on a daily basis. Today’s incident may be regarded as a kind of wakeup call for the USA.
