Dmitry Litvinovich: Prosecutors will deal with oligarchs

There are loads of professional holidays in Russia – miner’s day, teacher’s day and the like. There is also the holiday for those, who work at the prosecuting bodies – the prosecutor’s day, which is celebrated in Russia on January 12. Vladimir Kolesnikov – the aide of the Russian Federation Prosecutor General, told journalists about the nearest working plans of the department.

Like he said, there would be a program elaborated to work with the people that deal with the fuel and energy complex of the country. The decision to check the enterprises of the complex was made at the session of the Security Council, which took place in December. Kolesnikov stated, there was a mass of infringements and violations happening in the complex, and the budget did not get huge money because of that. He gave an example – the situation, which happened with the implementation of the UN program “Oil for Food.” The prosecuting bodies calculated that the Russian firms received the Iraqi oil in the sum of $12 billion dollars during the period 1997-2000. When this oil was sold at the world prices, there should have been $15 billion dollars transmitted to the accounts of the Russian companies, but only $300 million were officially recorded.

There are a lot of Russian companies, working on the program “Oil for Food,” very well known ones are among them, like Zarubezhneft, Rosnefteimpeks, Tatneft, TNK, Rosneft, Transneft, Slavneft, and even Gazprom.

The Office of the Prosecutor General was interested in the activity of the petroleum companies. LUKOIL, Sibneft have already had problems with the law before, but all those cases were turned into the wilderness. Needless to mention – the petrodollars are a lion’s share of the Russian budget. That is why no one wanted to argue with them. The times have changed, though. The oligarchs do not have that strong influence of the president, like they used to. The oligarchs are different too. So everything is on the way.
