Dmitry Litvinovich: The USA does not trust the Pashtuns anymore

The USA has attracted hundreds of its military men to hunt for the al-Qaeda terrorists in the east of Afghanistan, having refused from the help of the local Afghan commanders, the British Daily Telegraph reported.

Washington gave it to understand that it was not going to trust the Pashtuns, when it comes to such an important undertaking as the search for al-Qaeda terrorists. The American soldiers will now be doing the work, which was earlier done by the local Pashtun tribes that sent thousands of their men to the mountains for money.

Why did Washington decide to do so? As The Daily Telegraph wrote, the Afghans were giving the false information to the USA, when they were trying to find Osama’s cave, arranging the deals with terrorists, helping them to escape to Pakistan. Many of the al-Qaeda extremists managed to get out of Afghanistan, including the prime suspect himself. The Americans lay this blame on the Pashtuns.

Within the framework of the new operation, several hundreds of the American marines will start searching the caves for the guerrillas, who could be staying in there. The USA believes there can be some of the most wanted people living in the cave complex, for example Abdullah Kadus, one of the al-Qaeda commanders, and Jalaluddin Haqqani, the former head of the Armed force of the Taliban movement.

The cave complex in the east of Afghanistan is like a maze. It is extremely difficult to find someone there, but very easy to get lost and die. The US marines are not likely to have had that training – to be able to wage war in the mountains. As far as the bombing is concerned – to bomb the mountains is like to cut the water. The effect will be nil in both cases. The millions, which will be spent for nothing, could be spent on the restoration of the economy of Afghanistan.
