Toxic cloud leaves 180,000 housebound in Spain

A toxic cloud which emerged after a fire at an industrial plant left 180,000 people housebound on Monday in Murcia, Southern Spain.

The fire occurred at a fertiliser plant situated in an industrial area of the city. The authorities alerted the population of the surrounding area to stay at home with their doors and windows closed and air conditioning systems switched off until the cloud had dispersed.

It was feared that the particles suspended in steam could cause respiratory problems and burning to the eyes. The cloud affected the area between Murcia and Cartagena.
