The Far Eastern customs officials cut short less than one-hundredth part of marine bioresources smuggling in the region, deputy head of the Far Eastern Operative Customs Service (DVOT) Vladimir Samburov told a press conference held in Vladivostok on Friday. According to him, Russian budgets of all levels annually receive tens of millions of dollars less in revenues because of smuggling. Smugglers deliver to Asian countries mainly crabs, sea hedgehogs, crustacea and molluscs, Samburov pointed out. According to data provided by the DVOT, over the first nine months of 2001 alone the customs services of the Far Eastern federal district instituted 126 cases of violating customs legislation on the export of marine bioresources. At the same time, the entire Russian Pacific sector has so far only three fast going customs vessels, which control no more than 20 percent of the sea fishery waters.
