Russia Makes First Payment To IMF In 2002

Russia has made the first debt repayment to the IMF in 2002 worth $112.825 million (89.856 million SDRs) today. A representative of the Finance Ministry Press Service told RBC that the required sum had been reserved the day before. The payment was made ahead of the original payment schedule, because its initial date, January 5, is not a business day. This is the only payment to the IMF that Russia was due to make in January. In accordance with the payment schedule, Russia repaid about $2.1 billion to the IMF in 2001. Taking into account the early repayment of the IMF loan by the Central Bank, the total sum exceeded $4 billion. In accordance with the payment schedule, Russia will have to repay about $1.5 billion to the IMF in 2002. According to information from the Finance Ministry of Russia, the amount of the Russian government's debt to the IMF was about $8.1 billion as of July 1, 2001.
