UN Environment Programme Meets Today in Kenya

Mercury pollution and the need to eradicate lead from petrol are two of the important issues under discussion in Nairobi today as more than 100 countries meet under the auspices of UNEP.

The conference will also discuss the effects on the environment of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Palestine and will re-open the dossiers on how to tackle poverty without destroying the environment, started in the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg five months ago.

Klaus Toepfer, Director of the UNEP, stated that “Johannesburg gave us a programme to get a cleaner, healthier, stable world. This meeting will serve to help us to draw up a framework to eliminate poverty in a way which respects peoples and nature”.
