Russian President Discussed With Syrian President the Situation Around Iraq

On Saturday, on the initiative of the Syrian side, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Bashar al-Asad, President of the Syrian Arab Republic.

According to the information provided by the Kremlin press service, the heads of the state discussed the results of the visit to Russia in mid-January of Abdul Halim Haddam, Syria's vice-president.

Representatives of the press service indicated that both sides were confident that the agreements reached in Moscow would provide a goods basis for the subsequent development of Russian-Syrian cooperation in various spheres.

Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Asad exchanged opinions on the situation around Iraq. The press service of the Russian President emphasized that "the parties noted closeness of the positions of the two countries, which advocated the settlement of the Iraqi problem through political and diplomatic means, within the framework of the UN Security council."
