Member of Basayev's Gang Detained in Kalmykia

A member of Chechen terrorist Shamil Basayev's gang has been detained in Kalmykia, the South Volga area. 24-year-old Viskhan Khabibulayev was arrested in a special operation conducted by an investigation bureau, the military intelligence and the department for the fight against organised crime, the Interior Ministry's main department in the Southern federal district reported on Tuesday.

Born in the Avtury village in the Shali district, Chechnya, Khabibulayev was member of an illegal armed formation in 2000-2003. His immediate chief was Batrudin Olsunukayev, detained by law-enforcement bodies earlier.

Khabibulayev is suspected of committing a number of terrorist acts against federal servicemen and policemen in Chechnya.
