Russia Utilised 17 Outdated Nuclear Submarines in 2002

In 2002, the Ministry of Atomic Energy of Russia utilised 17 outdated submarines and unloaded spent nuclear fuel from 14 more. This is according to the statement made at a press conference by Alexander Rumyantsev, the Minister of Atomic Energy of Russia. The minister further said that, 'A considerable progress has been achieved over this year as concerns the utilisation of out-of-service submarines'. For instance, land facilities have been launched necessary for the use of a floating base for the processing of liquid radioactive waste. Over 2002, 3,500 cubic meters of such waste have been processed. The minister also noted the measures that have been taken toward perfecting the system of fast response to emergencies and possible accidents that may arise at nuclear facilities. During this year, the Ministries of Nuclear Energy, Emergencies, Health and the Federal Security Service conducted joint training sessions for their personnel detachments.
