3 mm of volcanic ash rain down on Kozyrevsk, Kamchatka

More than 3 millimeters of gray volcanic ash smelling of sulfur showered down on the village of Kozyrevsk as a result of eruption of the volcano Bezymyanny. According to Kamchatka's experimental and methodical seismological party, a trail of ash from Bezymyanny stretched out 40 kilometres to the southwest.

Local seismological stations registered explosions at the top of the volcano.

Heavy snowfall makes observations difficult, but it is generally assumed that this stage of eruption is accompanied by avalanches. Photographs made from space reveal a considerable thermal anomaly.

Air traffic in the area has become dangerous because of the ash.
