Moscow exceeded the targets of annual housing construction programme

The Moscow government has considerably exceeded the targets of the 2002 programme for housing contruction. The plan provided for 4.2 million square metres, but, as it turned out, the city has built 4.5 million square metres of housing.

According to the Moscow government, approximately 470,000 square metres out of this total amount have been given free of charge to families with low incomes. Another 900,000 square metres have been occupied by the Muscovites who moved into new flats because their previous old houses were estimated as unfit for further residence. The programme for pulling down such houses has been implemented in Moscow for four years now. Young families received 142,000 square metres on privileged terms. Altogether, 1.12 billion roubles (some 35,000 dollars) have been granted to Muscovites in the form of gratuitous subsidies for housing construction or purchase.
