Russian Security Council Secretary: no one can fight international terrorism alone

The Russian Security Council's Secretary Vladimir Rushailo has emphasized the necessity of joint efforts of the international community to fight against terrorism.

When opening the 5th session of the Committee of Security Council Secretaries of the Collective Security Treaty /CST/ member states, Rushailo stated that many events had happened since the last such meeting in Alma Ata that showed that our world was becoming more and more fragile.

"On the one hand, strategic stability has been reached, relations of Russia and many CIS countries with NATO and the EU look different, there are certain achievements in settling the situation in Afghanistan," Rushailo said.

"Yet at the same time, we cannot but worry about the situation around Iraq, the displays of international terrorism that go on in different places of the world, such as explosions on the Indonesian island of Bali, in the Kenyan city of Mombassa and the outrageous attack against the Theater Center in Moscow," he emphasized.

Even the most powerful country cannot "fight international terrorism" alone, the Secretary believes. Thus, it is necessary that all who adhere to the principles of democracy, tolerance, freedom of religion and human values should unite their efforts, he said.

Rushailo thanked the Georgian authorities represented at the session as observers, as Georgia is not a CST member, for the positive solution of the problems connected with preventing terrorist activities of those who had committed crimes on Russian territory.

"All democratic principles will only be worth something when we are able to protect them in a proper way," he emphasized. "It is for the protection of our common interests that the Collective Security Treaty was signed," the Secretary recalled.

In recent years the CST institutions have acquired authority and taken a respected place in ensuring international and regional security, Rushailo believes. This in many ways happened thanks to the good will of the CST member states' leaders who 10 years ago had courage to take the responsibility and put their signatures to the Collective Security Treaty, he pointed out.
